We made a survey with 15 people about our topic in order to know how the people think about the situation

The average age of the participants is showed in the following graph

Graph 1. Survey age range

Few people surveyed studied the same career as other participants so we were able to gather information from different points of view that may exist coming from different disciplines such as gastronomy, business, engineering, medicine, chemistry, etc.

Our questions about the topic were:

  • Describe in your own words what poverty is.

With this question we found that almost 100% of respondents think that poverty means not having enough resources or income to meet the basic needs of an individual or an entire family. In addition to this view there were a couple of people who associated poverty with more emotional and personal aspects.

  • What do you think the main cause of poverty is?

In this one we could observe that there are varied points of view but all agree that poverty is caused by lack of opportunities, some people focusing more on administrative mismanagement by the government or families in general. But, there was one person who related having many children to a cause of poverty.

  • Would you consider United States a poor country?

We asked a closed-ended question about whether the United States was considered a poor country, and as we see in the following graph, the 15 people surveyed answered yes.

Graph 2. USA is a poor country?

when we asked them to explain why they said that despite the amount of money the country has, it was badly distributed and there were also people who related American poverty with its low moral and ethical quality in many aspects.

  • Which circunstances influences poverty in the state?

This was one of the questions with the greatest discrepancy in the focus of the answers as some spoke of poor education, corruption in the political sphere, few opportunities, low salaries, etc., after all negative aspects that collectively harm the welfare of people.

  • Which state would you consider the poorest in USA?

In the following graph we see that the most popular answer to this question was that the state of Mississippi is the poorest in the United States according to the people surveyed.

  • Explain the difference between a low income country and middle income country

Basically everything agrees that the GDP and the income of people allow them to satisfy their basic needs more easily in a middle-income country compared to a low-income country.

  • What will you propose in order to reduce poverty?

People gave various opinions about this saying that the main thing would be to increase opportunities for people since that is what directly affects their personal and economic development and with which they are able to raise their quality of life. Still others proposed things like reducing taxes, boosting entrepreneurship and some other economic strategies in order to improve the economy in the country.

With this survey we were able to see better what people in general think about this topic and helped us to keep in mind their opinions and proposals.
